RockNet: Moonlight Theatre

Moonlight Amphitheatre, Vista, California installs RockNet digital audio network from Riedel Communications.

The Moonlight Amphitheatre in the City of Vista, California ordered and installed a comprehensive RockNet digital audio network installation from Riedel Communications. The Wuppertal based specialist for intercom and fiber technology delivered a solution that intergrates microphone inputs, remote control from digital Yamaha mixing consoles and digital AES3 output signals to drive the amplifiers into one single network.

The  Moonlight Amphitheatre is an outdoor performance venue that specializes in staging Broadway classics. The main objective for the installation was to provide a flexible and reliable system with high audio quality. Two mixing consoles – one for the orchestra and one for the vocals – needed to be included in the setup. Furthermore, it was important to be able to move large numbers of inputs between the orchestra pit and shows – depending on the type of event.

Six RN.341.MY expansion cards provide 48 channels for each of the two Yamaha PM5D consoles that are used for the orchestra and the vocals. Six RockNet RN.332.DO digital output interfaces offer AES3 signals for the amplifiers that drive the music portion of the speaker system. Eleven RockNet line input interfaces are installed in portable racks so that they can be used onstage or in the orchestra pit. They provide 64 analog line inputs. The rest of the 32 line inputs are used to integrate the wireless mic receivers and are installed in a rack at the side of the stage. In addition, a RN.302.LO supplies analog line out signals.

RockNet's redundant ring topology with up to 100 RockNet modules provides maximum reliability. The consoles can be plugged in at various locations and splits can be added to expand the installation with extra RockNet devices if needed. This way the installation can be adpaded to the demands of each staged play.

"We are really happy with RockNet. It offers a lot of flexibility in terms of installation and provides high quality audio at the same time. The ease of setting it up makes it the perfect solution for this theatre, because of its often changing plays," said Jeff Miller, Senior Consultant at Acoustic Dimensions.

The installation was provided by the Californian system integrator Acoustic Dimensions. The Moonlight Amphitheatre started rehearsals June 15th, 2009.
